Daddy! I Went Poopy and Potty!

Potty Training

This weekend I was completely focused on playing a Nintendo Wii game, when Olivia suddenly came running out of the bathroom screaming…

“Daddy! I went poopy! I went potty! I want a jellybean!”

There she was, completely naked from the waist down, wearing one of the biggest smiles I’ve ever seen. She was so proud of herself! And she wanted her jellybean. (We’ve started giving her a jellybean as a reward every time she goes potty in the toilet.)

Slightly startled, slightly bemused, I hit the pause button on my Wiimote and told her “Okay, Daddy’s coming.”

To my surprise, the toilet seat was up and there was indeed poo and pee in there.

As I helped her wipe and flush, I was filled with pride. You know, that pride you feel whenever your kid does something for the first time. My top two favorite “proud” moments are the first time Olivia smiled at me, and the first time I saw her sit up all by herself. Having her go potty all by herself—from start to finish—is a serious contender for third.

I mean it’s just amazing to me… My 2-year-old realized she had to pee & poop. She went into the bathroom, lifted the toilet seat, pulled down her pants, and climbed up. She sat there and did her business. All by herself!

Now the news isn’t all good. She had three accidents this weekend while wearing underwear, the worst coming earlier today while we made a quick trip to the pharmacy. She peed her pants right there in the small kitchen appliances aisle.

But then later this afternoon my wife and I looked at each other and asked “Where’s Olivia?” She was downstairs in the bathroom, going potty all by herself again.

So while we haven’t won the potty training war just yet, we’ve definitely had some historical victories this weekend… and I couldn’t be more proud! :D

  • Congratulations, that is great news and a great story. Smarty Pants also started Potty Training around the age of two, and we had accidents here and there, but it was worth it. He was really proud of himself and now that he is almost 3 we never have accidents anymore. We found he mostly had accidents when he was distracted or highly concentrated on playing. Overall, it is a really great time, and even if you back track a bit here and there, it is normal, you get back on track again quickly.

  • My boy took some encouragement and time but my two oldest girls initiated the whole process themselves. 18 months through the day and 20 months through the night is our record.

Olivia's kinda back-tracked this week on the potty training. Oh well... we're not going to sweat it. She'll get there!
  • Congrats to your daughter! That's a major accomplishment.

We had a few accidents here and there but noting too bad. I love the fact that my daughter can go all by herself...she's proud that she can do it and we love not having to hover over her every time.

    This too will pass...

    LOL... good one! :D
  • This too will pass (pun intended). I'm a lot less driven about potty-training our youngest who's nearly two and a half. The twins were three-ish when they were trained and my boy still had accidents at four. All is well now at four and a half but my eldest daughter still tells me about it every time she goes (and doesn't flush).

  • Good progress. We're still having problems with our 3+ year old at nights. We've been training her for a year now.
